Whenever I’m presented with a new theme or subject for an exhibition, I’m excited by the associations and images that come flooding into my mind. Living close to nature I’m aware of the powerful force of the bush and seaside environments. Filled with movement and the interplay of light and shadows, this is what I paradoxically like to capture in my sculptures.
As I’d already been exploring the ideas of light and dark in organic forms, it was a natural progression to think about techniques such as reduction and raku firings to produce the rich, dark tones in my sculptures. I love the drama created by contrast of dark and light and I was excited to explore the possibilities of interplay between these opposites.
